    Want to improve your camera skills shotting beautiful garden scenes, as well as get to enjoy the beauty of the Arboretum? This class is focused on hands-on-photography instruction outside, with members of the Arboretum's Photography Committee as the instructors. There will be plenty of chances to ask questions with both group and individual instruction. Bring your camera (film or digital and camera manual), lenses, tripod, memory cards, spare batteries and kee-pads (if desired). There will be a short luch break after the outdoor session (bring a sack lunch or purchase one at the Arboretum). Bring card reader to view photos for review.     Fishing Tournament

    Please join us for our annual fishing tournament and see how many fish you can catch! The tourament begins at 7:30 am and there is a registration of $20 per team (2 per team). There are two tournament sessions beginning at 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Teams will fish with two old-fashioned cane poles and a bucket of worms provided by the Farmstead. Each team will receive two gift bags, including: fishing tournament T-shirt and Child-size tackle box. Trophies will be awarded to winners in each category.     Georgia's Chicken Run

    This fun run for children from ages 0 to 99 is a fundraiser for the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead. The festivities will kick off with our National Anthem followed by the Chicken Dance performed by our very own Chelsea Chicken. After each race we will present medals to all the participants and trophies will be awarded after the last race. Before the races volunteers will run carnival style games and activities for the children. There will also be a variety of sponsors handing out free promotional items. Girls and boys will run/walk separately in each division except the babies & adults. Divisions are: baby walk (Ages 2 & under) 1/8 mile run/walk (Age 3) 1/8 mile run/walk (Age 4) 1/4 mile run/walk (Age 5) 1/4 mile run/walk (Age 6) 1/4 mile run/walk (Ages 7-8) 1/4 mile run/walk (ages 9-10) 1/4 mile run/walk (Ages 11-12) 1/4 mile run/walk (Adults) .     Open House On The Prairie

    Join our dedicated group of Prairie volunteers who have been working since 2002 to restore 160 acres of existing Arboretum land, south of Wolf Creek, into native prairie. See the native grasses, wildflowers in bloom, wildlife food plots, Prickly Pear Cactus Glad and prairie birds. This will be a walking tour with stops along the way to learn about each area of developing prairie. Dress for heat, sun, wind and unpredictable weather with boots (no open toe shoes or sandals) as the terrain is often uneven. Bottled water recommended. Tours will start every 20 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the last group at 1:00 p.m. Adluts only, please. The Overland Park fire and police departments, and other organizations will be on hand to teach children about safety and equipment.     Children have a unique way of seeing the world. How better to capture that creativity than with a camera? This two-hour workshop will focus on activities that will teach them how to take an interesting photograph. We will practice techniques such as framing, composition, lighting and camera angel. Any type of camera can be used in this class. The first part of the class will be in the classroom, with the remainder of time spent photographing outside in the Arboretum.     BioBlitz is an action - packed day designed as part scientific endeavor, part contest and part educational program. During a BioBlitz scientists and naturalists come together in a race against time to count as many species as they can in a given area over a 6 hour period. Participants will be looking to document: insects, birds, snakes, spiders, plants and much more! The BioBlitz contains a public component so that adults, kids and anyone interested can join experts and scientists in the field. BioBlitz offers a hands - on scientific experience and a chance to learn more about the diversity of life where people live. More details to come!
