Train Garden Helps Grandmother and Grandson Become Buddies

Pam’s 4-year-old grandson loves trains, so he loves exploring the Overland Park Arboretum’s Train Garden. That special spot has become a favorite place for Pam and Nolan to spend time together.

“When we go to the Arboretum, nothing else is competing for my grandson’s attention, so we really get to enjoy each other,” Pam says. “His favorite place is the Train Garden, where he watches the model trains weave in and out of a miniature community, through its tunnels and its beautiful landscape.

“The visits have become a tradition, and they give us a lot to talk about with each other. The Train Garden has helped us become buddies. I love the bond we have created here.”

Start your own traditions at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.

The year-round Train Garden includes a life-size caboose and a full-size railroad crossing gate. G-Scale (1/22nd of the actual size) model trains wind through bluffs, over lake and streams, and through model villages. It is a favorite of visitors of all ages. The trains are operated by volunteers and will run from 10 a.m. to close, except during wet, extreme cold, high heat and windy conditions. The final phase of the Train Garden – a third layout with 7 more tracks is under construction.
