Nutcracker Tea Party

AT YOUR HOUSE FOR 2020 - BUT WE'LL SEE YOU AGAIN IN DECEMBER 2021

We know it won’t be the same, but we invite you and your children to set aside an hour during the holidays to have your very own Nutcracker Tea Party at home and relive the Crescendo Conservatory Nutcracker Ballet performance from 2019.

Here’s how!

In advance –

  • Choose the date and invite virtual guests – bet Grandma would like to share the fun with the family – send her a Zoom or Face Time or Skype invitation.
  • Plan your menu and make the goodies – see below!
  • Using #nutcrackerteaparty and #artsandrec_op, post photos of your preparations and yummy creations.
  • Buy your raffle tickets and a Nutcracker-themed memento at the Nutcracker Boutique.

On the big day –

  • Set the table for “company” in front of the TV screen! And don’t forget the tea cups and poinsettia centerpiece.
  • Everyone get dressed up in their party clothes – this is a special occasion.
  • Set out your food and get settled for the ballet.
  • The show begins! Watch Crescendo Conservatory’s presentation of the Nutcracker Ballet (as recorded in 2019)
  • Enjoy your goodies while watching the ballet!
  • Again, using #nutcrackerteaparty and #artsandrec_op, post photos of your party. Become a friend of Nutcracker Tea Party on Facebook. Find us on Twitter and Instagram - @artsandrec_op.
  • And then after the curtain calls – everybody pitch in and clean up.

Now for What to Eat!

Tea Sandwiches

What makes a sandwich a tea party sandwich? Simple – cut bread into 2- or 3-bite shapes – triangles, circles (biscuit cutter), squares, or oblongs and be creative with the fillings. And, almost always – cut off the crusts!

Here are just a few of the 50 suggestions for some fun sandwiches from Food Network Magazine.

  • Egg Salad –Mix 3 chopped hard-boiled eggs, 3 tablespoons each chopped celery, red onion and cilantro, 2 teaspoons each dijon mustard and lime juice, and 1/4 cup mayonnaise. Cut white bread into pieces and spread with mango chutney. Sandwich with the egg salad.
  • Strawberry–Cream Cheese – Spread softened cream cheese on slices of date-nut bread and sandwich with sliced strawberries. Cut into pieces.
  • Pimiento Cheese – Mix 2 ounces softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup each shredded cheddar and jack cheese, 1/4 cup mayonnaise, and salt and pepper to taste; stir in 1/4 cup chopped pimientos. Sandwich on white bread. Trim the crusts and cut into pieces.
  • Cream Cheese and Jelly– Sandwich softened cream cheese and raspberry or strawberry jelly between slices of whole-wheat bread. Trim the crusts and cut into pieces.

Cookies

What cookies to have? Well, your favorites, of course! If you want to add a cookie-baking activity to your preparations and you’re looking for something special, try one of these ”Irresistibly Good Christmas Cookies to Make This Season” from Good Housekeeping.

And instead of making gingerbread men this year, what about Nutcracker cookies. There are lots of sources for purchasing a nutcracker cookie cutter (including the one pictured by Wilton) if you don’t have one. Let the icing begin!

On the healthy side

At the Nutcracker Tea Party, there’s always fresh fruit and vegetables on the table. Don’t forget to include something nutritious! Carrot and celery sticks, apple slices, and strawberries are always good.

Beverages

  • Hot tea, of course!
  • Lemonade or fruit punch
  • Milk (always good with cookies)
