Spring Plant Sale
May 5, 2017
9 a.m.-7 p.m.
1st Day of 2-Day Sale
They say you can’t buy happiness. But gardeners know they can – in the form of plants. Happiness will be for sale at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens 19th Annual Spring Plant Sale this weekend. The sale is open to the public, rain or shine, under a big-top tent on Friday (9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.). The sale will feature
- native plants, butterfly plants, and pollinator plants
- colorful annuals
- hanging baskets and planters
- wide selection of perennials for shade and sun – including varieties featured in Arboretum beds
- great herbs, tomatoes and small fruits for cooks
- young native trees and shrubs.
“The sale is unique because of its emphasis on helping to create a sustainable world for butterflies, bees and other wildlife,” says Pat Blanchat, plant sale chair. “People who garden just naturally want to share what they know and love about the environment, and that’s one thing that makes our sale special – knowledgeable gardeners are always on hand to ‘talk plants’ and assist shoppers.
A preview sale and reception for Friends of the Arboretum members only will be held on Thursday, May 4, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Members receive a 10% discount throughout the sale. Non-members may join at any time and receive the member discount. We’ll have many of the most interesting new varieties this year,” notes Anne Wildeboor, Arboretum Horticulturist. “This is your chance to support the Arboretum while adding some fresh appeal to your 2017 garden.”
Plants are all grown locally, and proceeds to toward expansion of the gardens. Karen Kerkhoff, Arboretum Supervisor, reminds us all that it’s a great opportunity to shop for Mother’s Day. “Bring a friend – bring a neighbor -introduce someone to the Arboretum.
Arboretum admission fee does not apply to those visiting the sale only.
