Family Activities

Get outdoors with the whole family!

Enjoy being together, getting some fresh air and exercise, learning about the flora and fauna of our region.

No matter the reason you come or the event you attend, it's going to be a grand experience!

Mark your calendar to bring the family to one of our FREE (with paid admission to the gardens) special events - like KiteFest in April or Hot Summer Days in June, July or August, Hedge Apple Day in October, and 4 Arboretum Nights  - or come any day of the year (except December 25) to hike a trail, play in the Children's Garden, be amazed by the beauty of our fabulous Monet Garden, visit the Train Garden, or just smell the roses!

Classes and special events may have an additional admission as noted.

Check the Arboretum Calendar for all upcoming events and activities for families.

Nights at the Arboretum
Kite Fest

National Train Day Activities in the Train Garden

May 13, 2017

10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Learn about rail safety while you and your family enjoy our beautiful train garden, with its real caboose, working scale model trains, and miniature Old Overland Park. There’ll be games, activities, a rolling stock sale, and kids can run our trains!

The Enchanted Forest
PLEASE NOTE: It is with regret that we announce that recent storms have washed away most of the Enchanted Forest domains of our magical woodland creatures who took up residence at the Arboretum this summer. Their castle remains! Thursday morning art classes will continue.

May 27 - September 4, 2017

The Arboretum is enchanting as the gnomes, fairies, sprites and other woodland creatures have once again taken up residence along the woodland trail. Back by popular demand, this exhibit is one not be be missed - you may even want to return for a second or third visit.

New this year - the home of the magical forest-creature royalty and a lively Saturday afternoon at the Arboretum on July 22 at the Enchanted Faire!

Register for children's classes to enhance the Enchanted Forest experience. There's a class every Thursday morning throughout the exhibit!
Hot Summer Days

June 9, July 14, and August 11, 2017

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This event features water games for the whole family, prepare to get wet and maybe a little messy. Splashing around will help keep the temperatures down, and everyone will enjoy this cool down activity. We will also be making ice art and enjoying icy treats!

Grandparents Day Concert

September 10, 2017

4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Join us for fun with the whole family at the Arboretum.

Children’s entertainment will help us celebrate Grandparents Day.
