To kick off the "Whirlwind: Art in Motion" exhibit of kinetic sculpture at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Friends of the Arboretum hosted a symposium featuring the artists and experts in the field of this unique art form.

Event Schedule
  • 8:00-9:00 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast. No food or drink may be taken into the auditorium..
  • 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Symposium
  • 12:00-1:00 p.m. Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art Guided Tour  (limited to first 40 people who register at check-in)
  • 2:00-4:00 p.m. Opening Reception at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

Speakers covered the history of kinetic art, kinetic sculpture today and tomorrow, and how art and science combine in the construction of kinetic art. The session concluded with a roundtable discussion featuring the "Whirlwind" sculptors.

Registration included continental breakfast, the symposium, an optional guided tour of The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and an invitation to the grand opening ceremony at the Arboretum with the artists available to discuss their work in person. Admission to the Arboretum was free that afternoon. There was reduced registration fee for students and educators.
