Arboretum Spring Plant Sale May 5 – 6, 2017
Overland Park Arboretum Spring Plant Sale
They say you can’t buy happiness. But gardeners know they can—in the form of plants. Happiness will be for sale at the Overland Park Arboretum plant sale the first weekend in May. The sale is open to the public, rain or shine, under a big-top tent, on Friday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The 19th annual sale will feature native, butterfly, and pollinator plants; colorful annuals, hanging baskets and planters. There will also be a wide selection of perennials for shade and sun, including varieties featured in Arboretum beds. Great herbs, tomatoes, and small fruits for cooks; and grasses, young native trees and shrubs.
“The Arboretum’s plant sale is unique because of its emphasis on helping to create a sustainable world for butterflies, bees, and other wildlife,” said Pat Blanchat, plant sale chair. “People who garden just naturally want to share what they know and love about the environment, and that’s one thing that makes our sale special—knowledgeable gardeners are always on hand to ‘talk plants’ and assist shoppers.”
A preview sale and reception for Friends of the Arboretum members will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 4. Members receive a 10% discount throughout the sale. Non-members can join at any time and receive the member discount.
“We’ll have many of the most interesting new varieties this year,” noted Anne Wildeboor, Arboretum horticulturist. “This is your chance to support the Arboretum while adding some fresh appeal to your 2017 garden.”
Plants are locally grown, and proceeds go toward expansion of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. “It’s also a great opportunity to shop for Mother’s Day,” added Karen Kerkhoff, Arboretum Supervisor. “Bring a friend—bring a neighbor— introduce someone to the Arboretum!”
Located a half mile west of Hwy. 69 at 179th and Antioch, the Arboretum is a year- round retreat and inspiration for everyone who enjoys the outdoors.
